How does diatomaceous earth work?

Francodex diatomaceous earth is an insecticide made from fossilized microalgae.
Their skeletons are primarily composed of silica, a mineral that resembles tiny glass crystals.

A mechanical action, by contact

Insects and mites that walk on the powder become coated with diatomaceous earth.
Upon contact with their exoskeletons, the powder causes rapid dehydration.
The insects dehydrate and die within a few hours.
In cold weather or high humidity, the process may take longer (one to two days).

No resistance develops

According to the manufacturer, diatomaceous earth does not cause resistance in insects.
The treatment therefore remains effective with repeated applications.

Which pests does it target, and where should it be used?

Target pests

• ants;
• cockroaches;
• fleas;
• red mites (poultry parasites);
• woodlice;
• other crawling insects and mites.

Areas to treat

• inside the house: floors, baseboards, corners, and cracks;
• animal sleeping areas: kennels, cages, baskets;
• the chicken coop, to control red mites;
• outdoors, in areas where insects pass through.

The product is intended for use in the animal’s environment, never on the animal itself.

Directions for Use

Before Treatment

Remove people and animals from the area to be treated.
Also remove food items.
Wait at least 2 hours before allowing them to return.

During treatment

• Shake the aerosol vigorously until you hear the ball break loose.
• Spray a thin layer onto the areas to be treated.
• Pay special attention to corners: get closer to the surface if necessary.
• Once the solvent has evaporated, a film of white powder will remain on the surface.

After treatment

Shake the aerosol can upside down after each use. This clears any remaining powder from the valve and nozzle.
Repeat the treatment after rain, when the white powder has disappeared, or if the insects return.

Composition

• Kieselguhr silicon dioxide (CAS No. 61790-53-2): 7.2% w/w;
• Geraniol (CAS No. 106-24-1): 0.03% w/w;
• Biocidal product TP 18: insecticides, acaricides, and products against other arthropods.

Precautions for Use

• Extremely flammable aerosol: Keep away from heat, sparks, and flames. Do not spray toward a flame.
• Causes severe eye irritation: avoid contact with eyes.
• May cause drowsiness or dizziness: do not inhale the spray and use in a well-ventilated area.
• Do not spray on animals.
• Turn off the power to electrical appliances before treating nearby.
• Keep out of reach of children. Store in a well-ventilated area.
